Carla Blackwell Obituary

 

    Carla Faye Blackwell, 72  , of Corsicana passed away December 29, 2019. She was diagnosed with cancer Dec. 2016 and fought a courageous battle.  Carla was born May 13, 1947 in Houston, Texas to Louis John and Eunice Faye (Mathews) Wilson. Her dad's nick name for her was "Susie". 

    Carla started school in Klein, Texas, her parents moved to Grapeland when she was in the 6th grade and she graduated from Grapeland High School in 1965. Their move to Grapeland was to own and run a dairy. She then attended Massey Business College in Lufkin where she met and married Edward N. Blackwell April 2, 1966 at Grapeland, TX and they celebrated 53 years of marriage.

    Carla and Edward lived in Homestead, Florida and Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri during Edward's tour in the Army before coming back to Grapeland where they had several business adventures, one being a Bar B Q Restaurant for five years and selling fire works on the side; she also help her parents in their drive in grocery store/gas station during their time there.  They then moved to Huntsville, Texas were she did in home child care for 15 years with infants; from there they moved to the Houston area where she sold Fine Jewelry at Foley's Department Store. In 1999 she started working in the funeral business with Edward as office manager in Houston, then Livingston for Sentry Group Services; they moved to Tonkawa, OK in Dec 2003 to manage two funeral homes for the Duggers and bought them in 2007, owning them for five years before selling them and working for the new owners a couple of years before moving back to Texas to be close to their children. Moving to Corsicana, TX Carla worked as office manager for Corley Funeral Home until she was unable to work.

    Carla was a member of the Tonkawa Baptist Church, Lions Club, Garden Club, and P.E.O.  She enjoyed bowling, gardening, reading and cross stitch; she and Edward made the trip of a life time after selling the funeral homes, to Germany to see their Air Force son and family; they traveled around Germany, to Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein  and took a Mediterranean cruise seeing Rome, Spain, Italy, and France . 

    Carla is survived by her sons, John Applin Blackwell and his wife, Virginia "Ginny" of  Dew, TX, Michael Louis Blackwell and his wife, Tonya of Krum, her daughter, Susan Faye Greak and her husband Daniel  of Tarkington, TX; her grandchildren, Travis (A&M) and Cooper Blackwell, McKenzie (OU) and Kade Blackwell, Nathan and Cullen Greak; great granddaughter, Emersyn Rae Sangl her brother, Milton Wilson and his wife Wanda; her Aunt Sybil Waters of Palestine, TX; a cousin who is more a sister, Linda and her husband Dr. Bob Stout; numerous, nieces and nephews; brother-in-laws, sister-in-law and other relatives.   

 

Carla is preceded in death by her parents Louis and Eunice.

 

Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at Blackwell & Vazquez Woodforest Funeral Home 750 Uvalde Rd. Houston, Texas 77015 from 5:00pm - 8:00pm.  A celebration of life will take place on Thursday, January 2, 2020 at 11:30am at Blackwell & Vazquez Woodforest Funeral Home. Interment to follow at 1:30pm in the Houston National Cemetery 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive Houston,Texas 77038. In lieu of flowers please make donations to The American Cancer Society.
